Dragon*Con 2012

I used an opportunity to visit Dragon*Con 2012 in Atlanta, Ga., to shoot informal street portraits of the costumed masses in a straightforward style.

I made a conscious effort not to simply snipe photos of subjects. In every case, my subject was aware they were being photographed. I often asked permission, or simply used hand gestures, motioning subjects where I wanted them to stand. To minimize perspective distortion, I shot at 50mm, and occasionally used an 85mm lens to provide more separation in crowded areas.

My goal wasn't to find the craziest, or even most interesting costumes. In the most deliberate portraits, I wanted to remove my subjects from the carnival-like atmosphere of the Con, and contrast the fantastic imagery against the mundane hotel hallways and urban spaces.
